IWS’s core curriculum subjects are Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, all of which meet Quebec’s educational standards based on the progression of learning criteria. Staff share an understanding and commitment to the instructional goals and priorities set forth in their respective programs and accept responsibility for students’ learning of the school’s essential curricular goals.

In each subject area, standards are organized by grade level, mapping out a specific sequence of knowledge and skills that students are expected to learn as they progress through elementary school.

The standards described at each level are intended to address students’ specific learning needs and abilities at a particular stage of their intellectual, social, and physical development. The standards reflect clearly articulated sequences, with each grade level’s learning expectation built upon previous expectations while preparing students for more challenging concepts and intense coursework at the next level.

English Language Arts

The components of our Language Arts Program range from oral language development to writing conventions, knowledge building, and motivation for literacy.

Mathematics

Our Everyday Mathematics Program is organized into six (6) mathematical strands that cover several skills and concepts. The strands are numeration, computation, measurements, geometry, data, and algebraic thinking.

Geography

We follow the Canadian National Standards for Geography. The focus is on the Five Themes of Geography:

  • Place and Location
  • Movement
  • Region
  • Environment
  • Interaction

Science

Our Science Fusion Program is an interactive state-of-the-art program that delivers a holistic science experience using print, digital, hands-on resources, and virtual labs, which our students enjoy.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies Program helps our students develop the skills and perspectives to encourage participation in their local and global communities. Knowing who they are and where they come from, they can appreciate the similarities and differences of many cultures and become active members of their society.

Onkwehonwehnéha

Onkwehonwehnéha Tsi Ionterihwaienstáhkhwa (Indian Way School) offers culturally-based language programming that reflects Rotinonhsión:ni values, traditions, and beliefs. Our curriculum and authentic resources are developed and produced by us and for us as Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwehón:we.

French

Our French Program uses the Explorosity Nelson Curriculum. The curriculum aims to foster an enriched learning experience that provides a solid foundation for our students to develop their language knowledge further.

Bullying

Through role-play, our Bullying Program prepares students to learn how to address and identify different types of bullying.

Music

Our Music program exposes students to a variety of musical styles. We begin by discovering our traditional songs and instruments. In grade three, our students are introduced to the recorder and the keyboard. Students are allowed to compose their original songs at a beginner’s level.

Physical Education

Our Physical Education Program utilizes a 400-meter track, a traverse climbing wall, a Weekidz Challenge course, a basketball court, a soccer field, a playground, and tons of equipment to help students develop the necessary skills to maintain physical fitness.

Art

Our Art Program enriches the learning experience in the classroom with students. The intent of the program is to motivate and excite students to realize and value the importance of Art.
